ENGL120: Introduction to English |
We live in a text-based culture, coming into daily contact with stories, or narratives, that inform and entertain us, allow us to communicate, and even enable us to make sense of the world and our lives. In this unit you will be studying how narrative meaning is created in English texts. The readings, on different topics and in different forms, have been drawn from various cultures and periods, and all represent different ways of telling stories. These short texts, along with the critical and theoretical material introduced in this unit, will be studied to provide detailed and informed ways of reading, analysing and interpreting various kinds of narratives. This unit is designed to develop critical reading skills and more broadly to equip students for further study in English.
