ENGL261: Paradigm Shift: 1700-1830 |
This unit introduces students to the literatures of the Enlightenment and of Romanticism in Britain. In doing so it offers ways of examining cultural change---that is, in this case, ways of interpreting how worldviews replace each other. The texts read for the unit are by writers including Pope, Swift, Johnson, Wordsworth, and Keats. There is focus on (among other things) notions of the quest, of the utopian, of vision and imagination, of the innocent abroad, of the New World and of the Orient.
