GEOS801: Introduction to Geographic Information Science for Postgraduates |
Many professionals in the broad areas of environmental science, management and planning use GIS (Geographic Information Systems) to analyse and map spatial information. This unit is an introductory unit for postgraduates. It will cover the underlying concepts of GIS, applications, the use of commercial GIS software and will develop for the students a GIS skills set. The unit consists of two streams, one focusing on applications in the biophysical environment and the other on applications in the human and built environment. The lecture programs are common, but the practical programs are elective. The GIS software used is ArcGIS. Students enrolling in the unit must have a computer with one of the following operating systems: Windows XP, Windows NT or Windows 2000.
