HIST217: Australia, Britain and the Empire 1770-1901 |
HIST 217 is an exploration of the making of nineteenth century Australia. It begins with gold and ends with federation. Key themes include: the Butlin Revolution, faction politics and the Labor Party, "Colonial Socialism", immigration, sectarianism urbanization and the emergence of the Australian colonies as social laboratories. There will also be an attempt to locate Australia in the wider British Empire. Were these the years of "missed opportunity"? Could we really have made something here?
