HLTH204: Radiographic Physics and Protection

This unit aims to develop students' knowledge of the underlying physical principles of Medical Radiation Science. This includes three modules, the first of which encompasses study of Radiation Physics, its principles and current technology of imaging equipment. In Module 2, students will become familiar with image production and image processing techniques. Module 3 describes the biological effects of radiation as well as current radiation protection techniques. Topics include: Atoms and Atomic Structure; Electricity and Magnetism; Electric Currents; Electromagnetic Radiation; X-ray Circuits; X-ray Tubes; X-ray Production; X-ray Interactions; Density and Contrast; Image Formation; Radiographic Film; Film Processing; Intensifying Screens; Grids and Scatter Reduction; Quality Control; Special Radiographic Equipment; Biological effects of Radiation; Radiation Protection; Designing your own X-ray Facility; Legislative Controls on the use of Ionising Equipment.
