ITEC101: Introduction to Systems Design and Data Management

This unit introduces students to requirements engineering, systems analysis and design, and databases. The principles and concepts of large-scale data storage, management and modelling are considered. Particular emphasis is placed upon the practical application of this conceptual material in a business environment.

The systems analysis and design section of the unit introduces the traditional Structured Systems Analysis and Design Method (SSADM) and acts as a design precursor to the database section of the unit. A number of different methodologies for database implementation are covered, including (but not limited to) flat-file, hierarchical, network and relational approaches. Fundamental data modelling tools, techniques and query languages are considered and the Structured Query Language (SQL) is examined in some depth.

The importance of an ethical approach to the collection and management of data and to the design and construction of systems is emphasised throughout.
