ITEC201: Design and Development of Database Systems

This unit provides an in-depth study of modern database technology and its dominant role in the development and maintenance of enterprise information systems. Its aim is to teach students how to develop robust, data-centric business applications. Emphasis is placed upon the use of SQL as both an interactive and a programmatic language, on the principles underlying the relational database model and upon the practicalities of designing and implementing applications that interact with client-server-based database management systems (DBMS).

The role and application of conceptual schema in modelling entities and their relationships within an enterprise is examined in some depth. Practical work expands on this aspect of systems analysis by giving students the opportunity to realise conceptual designs as complete applications.
