JPN323: Manga: Global Imagery |
The recent extraordinary growth of international reception and consumption of manga and anime (printed/animated Japanese cartoons) indicates that these once culturally specific Japanese media products have spread out from their local source and now constitute a multi-modal imagery with global reach and appeal.
This unit will examine the rich, diverse, kaleidoscopic imagery created in manga/anime and shared by global society. It includes the examination of what we are actually sharing, how the culture's images are transplanted or morphed to assimilate the host cultures, and the academic study of the field spanning a wide range of disciplines. The unit will be conducted in English, and no prior knowledge of Japanese language is required.
