JPN330: Reading in Japanese Literature |
This unit will examine major works from various genres and periods of Japanese literature. In particular, focus will be placed on the Japanese classical masterpiece, The Tale of Genji and the intertexuality of the novel in diverse fields of art in later periods, such as poems, stage performances (eg Noh, Takarazuka), novels, manga/anime and other visual media. To enhance the literary analysis, attention will also be directed to the socio-cultural aspects of each period. Assessment is based on class participation and assignments including online quizzes, presentation, English essay and a 2-hour examination.
