Given that people enter and perform contracts almost every day of their lives, lawyers must be able to advise clients on their rights under the law of contract. In most forms of legal practice, the lawyer will be confronted with issues relating to contract law virtually on a daily basis. This unit addresses the following issues to ensure students have an understanding of: the formation elements of contract; capacity to enter a contract; the formalities required of contract; the doctrine of privity of contract; he developing doctrine of promissory estoppel; the content and construction of contracts; vitiating factors affecting contract; how a contract may be discharged; illegal contracts; and, contracts void for public policy.
