LAW407: Labour Law

The primary objective of the course is to explore the way law governs the labour market. The course will begin with readings that focus on the socio-legal nature of labour law. This will be followed by a number of classes dealing with the common law doctrines that categorise the employment relationship. The course then fans out to embrace major topics that highlight the interplay between labour law and the social structure. Race and ethnicity in the workplace is illuminated. Also class and gender in the workplace is explored. Occupational health and safety law is examined. The legislative framework of enterprise bargaining is covered. The rise and fall of the arbitration system is another important topic examined.
