LAW535: Willem C. Vis International Arbitration Moot |
This first-semester unit is based upon the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Competition which is held annually in Vienna, Austria and involves over 130 teams from over 40 countries. Students will work as a team to research and draft written memoranda for clients arising out of a fictional international contractual dispute involving the Vienna Convention for the International Sale of Goods. The arguments raised in those memoranda will then be resolved through oral submissions in Vienna using the procedures of International Commercial Arbitration. The competition begins in October and ends in Vienna the week before Easter of the next year. Through the Moot, this unit addresses topical issues in both private international law and in international commercial arbitration law. Students undertaking this course will be expected to work on the Moot throughout their summer vacation.
