LAW542: Issues in International Heritage Conservation |
This unit takes a comparative view of heritage laws in Europe, Australia and Asia in the light of the challenges facing them. Laws for the protection of cultural and natural heritage are an important aspect of the legal systems of modernising states in which Australian expertise is playing an important facilitative role. As countries outside Europe introduce regulatory schemes for the protection of heritage, however, the underlying concepts are being challenged. International instruments and domestic laws show similarities but the cultures in which they operate are very different. These challenges raise interesting questions for law making and regulatory design.
