LING211: Grammar and Meaning

The aim of this unit is to interest students in the general problem of how our linguistic meanings become accessible to others. Is meaning a matter of what words we choose, or of how we combine these words, or both? If both, then what part is played in the expression of our meanings by words, and what by word-combinations - that is, grammatical structures? Such questions lead us to a closer examination of the relation between grammar and meaning and to the description of grammatical choices in sufficient detail to describe and compare texts. At the same time an attempt will be made to relate meaning and the form of language to the social needs of its speakers. This allows us to examine the role of social context in the creation and expression of meaning and grammar.
