LING402: Honours Seminar in Modern Linguistics

This unit provides a forum for an advanced discussion of major linguistic ideas and theories, as far as possible, in the original form in which the ideas were proposed. The issues taken up - typically from scholars like Saussure, Hjelmslev, Firth, Jakobson, Boas, Sapir, Bloomfield, Chomsky, Halliday, and Lamb - require students to consider the foundations of linguistics as a science. The series also encompasses core concepts in the domain of speech science. The focus of the course will include the kinds of data that the different theories employ, and the application of a given theory to different varieties of discourse. The aims of the course, then, are to confront core ideas directly and to bring students to multiple perspectives on those ideas.
