MCSI350: Truth and Persuasion in Contemporary Media

Objectivity is a basic media value. Is it dead in our post-modern era? This unit looks at the themes of truth and persuasion in the context of contemporary media, examining specific practical and ethical issues such as objectivity vs subjectivity, privacy vs public interest, political correctness, accusations of media bias, and the alleged "dumbing down" of the media. Using a framework derived from knowledge of the media and from the Christian tradition, the unit examines four specific areas of the media: news reporting, advertising, reality TV and televangelism.
