MHPG811: Colonialism, Sex, Gender |
In recent years, historians have shifted the emphasis of studies of European colonialism from the public sphere to the private arena of sexuality and the family. This innovative unit analyses the ways in which gender, sexuality and race emerge as fundamental indices of power in the establishment and maintenance of European empires from the 18th to the 20th centuries. It will consider the perspectives of both colonisers and colonised. Topics for consideration range from inter-racial sexuality, prostitution and concubinage, to 'mixed-race' identities, homosexuality, popular culture, travel writing and the racialised construction of femininity and masculinity. Themes will be considered in the context of Australia, India, southeast Asia and parts of Africa.
