PSY104: Introduction to Psychology I

This unit introduces students to the discipline of psychology through a focus on the physiological bases of behaviour, perception, motivation, the nature of personality and psychopathology. The unit conveys information about substantive material, methods of inquiry, and assumptions of theory associated with the science and profession of psychology through lecture, tutorial, and practical classes. The relevance of the discipline of psychology to understanding behaviour and experience in everyday life is emphasised.

Note: (a) Students who do not feel confident about their basic mathematical ability are advised to attempt STAT170 Introductory Statistics as a full-year unit rather than as a half-year unit. (b) The corequisite unit assumes that students will have a basic background in arithmetic and algebra; any students without this background are advised to remedy their deficiency by private study of basic mathematical operations before commencement of the unit.

Evening students will be able to download lectures as MP3 files via the PSY104 website, or obtain tapes from the Centre for Open Education, but must attend practical sessions.
