SOC290: Work and Employment

Work is a basic social experience. How can we understand it? This unit will search for answers. Briefly, it explores three issues. First, it examines the meaning of work, ranging over the place of labour in widely different social worlds. Second, it studies the processes that organise work in contemporary societies. These include the quest for profits, the clash of opposing interests, and the rise of machines. Finally, it contemplates the future. Is work changing? If so, how?
