SOC375: Understanding Contemporary Societies

There is a common perception that we live in societies that are fundamentally different to those of an earlier 'modernity'. There is also the sense that change is now more pronounced and more difficult to manage. But how do we know that our lives are fundamentally different to those of previous generations? This unit critically evaluates the claim that global, late- or post-modern societies are different to earlier social formations and that they require different theoretical and analytical tools.

Through case studies such as the transformation of intimacy, the emergence of alternative spiritualities, and the growing awareness of risk, this unit will address the theme: what kind of society is emerging in the 21st century and how are we to understand the processes of change that have been unleashed?
