CBMS832: Protein Discovery and Analysis

This unit outlines chemical principles underlying the most recent developments in protein science. This includes an understanding of the emerging new disciplines of proteomics, structural biology and bioinformatics. The unit covers methods used today in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries to isolate and purify macromolecules, including recombinant proteins.

Recent developments in techniques such as mass spectrometry and electrophoresis are . discussed in relation to proteomics analysis. Relevant biomolecular analysis methods (amino acid, carbohydrate) are presented. Molecular properties leading to the tertiary structure of proteins are discussed in detail, and structure determination methods outlined. Practical aspects of the unit involve hands-on chromatography purification and mass spectrometry, 3D molecular graphics and use of major protein web-based resources.
