ENGL275: World Literature in English

This unit examines writing in English or in English translation from the formerly colonised nations or the world. It explores the rich literature generated by a confrontation with real political and global concerns, and the influence of more than one literary tradition on the formation of texts. Topics covered include issues of authenticity, place and history, the crisis of identity in the postcolonial world and national and cultural reconstruction. Indigenous writing in colonized nations and the writing of the postcolonial diaspora are also considered, in relation to concepts of disenfranchisement, memory, globalisation and exile.
