HIST217: Australia, Britain and the Empire 1770-1901

A study of Australian/British relations from Britain's annexation of New South Wales in 1770 to the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The focus of the unit will be centred on the Australian colonies though useful comparisons and contrasts will be drawn, where appropriate, with other British dependencies. The climate of opinion in Britain and in Australia concerning the imperial connection will be studied, and the problems associated with the attempted transplantation of British culture and civilisation to a neutral or potentially hostile environment will also be examined. Issues of race, nationalism, gender, and culture will form a part of the overall mosaic of British and colonial history within which work in this unit will be located.
