HIST367: Gender and Empire

This unit provides students with a higher level of analysis of themes encountered in Australian history, world/global history and European history. Focusing on the historical construction of gender (masculinities and femininities) in a range of colonial sites and episodes from the 18th to the 20th centuries, students will explore the intersections of gender with race, class, sexuality, religion, politics and culture. Topics will range from slavery and convicts, to missionary evangelism, sport, explorers and anti-colonial nationalist movements in places including Australia, the West Indies, Canada, NZ and Africa. Students will conduct research in primary sources (including the database Empire OnLine), write a research essay, and be thoroughly immersed in the relevant scholarly literature of this dynamic field.
