JPN115: Introduction to Japanese Writing |
This unit systematically introduces students to Hiragana, Katakana and approximately 120 Kanji. It also examines the historical development of writing in Japan. Students will be divided into 2 tutorial streams: one for learners with no knowledge of Chinese characters, and a second for those who are already familiar with Chinese characters but have not formally studied Japanese script. The focus of the two groups will differ somewhat. The non kanji background group will concentrate on learning both the reading and writing of kanji. The second, kanji background group, will focus more on pronunciation and the uses of kanji in Japanese language and culture.
