MAS222: Introduction to the Cinema

This unit is an introduction to: 1) some of the main theoretical issues and debates that have defined film studies as an area of cultural interest, and 2) some of the key historical moments in classical Hollywood filmmaking (with examples taken from Hollywood cinema from 1930s to 1960s) and in international filmmaking (from the 1940s through to more recent times.) Lectures, in conjunction with weekly film screenings, consider topics such as the conventions, technologies, and aesthetics of film narrative using contemporary filmmaking examples as well as examples from earlier in film history; film genres, film styles, cinematic innovations, and modes of storytelling; the relation between fiction and documentary film (and their hybrids).
