2009 Course Handbook

ACES818: Education and Culture

This unit begins by exploring the idea of youth culture, and responses to young people, and the ways that it shapes and is shaped by commercial interests. It operates on the notion, familiar to students of cultural studies, that members of society are both consumers and producers of culture. In fact, it is claimed that we produce ourselves through our consumptive activities. One prominent cultural product is film. The unit also looks at film as one way that students (among others) draw on cultural material.
