JPN840: Issues in Intercultural Communication

This unit examines cross-cultural pragmatics in Japanese. Aspects of language encounters (eg, apologising, complaining, complimenting) will be analysed from the cultural perspective. Special attention will be given to the cultural attitudes and values that govern the utterances. The course will adopt a heuristic approach by which each student explores his/her own communication through an examination of the Japanese language.
