PSY890: Trauma Theories and Interventions
The aims of this unit are to understand theoretical and clinical issues associated with childhood and adult trauma and to develop counselling and clinical skills in working with survivors of trauma. Students will learn theories pertaining to the psychological impact of traumatic experiences (including physical and sexual abuse, neglect, natural disasters, traumatic accidents and traumatic medical experiences), as well as empirical evidence pertaining to symptom profile and predictors of onset and maintenance of trauma (including ASD, PTSD, complex PTSD, and loss and grief). Students will also be provided with skills training in assessing trauma populations as well as training in evidence based practice in common CBT oriented therapeutic approaches in treating trauma/PTSD, which will include graded exposure, prolonged exposure combined with cognitive therapy, and cognitive processing therapy.
