PSY904: Counselling and Cultural Perspectives
This unit will focus on the skills of counselling within the interpersonal relationship between client and therapist. Special emphasis will be placed on the context of the client's world and its relationship to the presenting problems of the client, including the cultural context. The unit will highlight the importance of the therapeutic alliance and emphasise core counselling skills to optimise the therapeutic nature of this relationship as well as self reflection to facilitate the depth of the alliance. General strategies for conceptualising client problems, with directions for intervention, will also be taught, concentrating on an integrative approach. Students will be encouraged to develop their own counselling approach based on the models presented in the unit.
