PSY967: Evidence Based Clinical Psychology

This unit covers general topics related to evidence based practice: issues in designing and implementing research in clinical practice; efficacy, effectiveness, and cost effectiveness of psychological interventions; evaluating treatment outcome for individuals and groups; procedures for using published research in informing clinical practice; barriers to implementing evidence based techniques in clinical practice. Throughout the topics taught, the focus will be on the implications of the nomothetic approach often adopted in published research for the idiographic nature of clinical practice. As a result of successful completion of this unit, students will be able to design and implement an appropriate strategy for evaluating the effectiveness of interventions for individual clients; understand the practical issues surrounding the design and implementation of research in clinical practice; access and evaluate evidence about the efficacy and effectiveness of interventions for specific problems; and understand the process of implementing evidence based techniques in clinical practice.
