PSYC926: Counselling Skills in Sexuality and Sexual Health Issues

This unit is designed to assist students to become knowledgeable and gain skills in counselling clients with sexuality based issues and problems. In particular, students will gain knowledge in theories and models of human sexual development, sexuality and gender identity. Students will also learn how to assess clients who present with sexuality based problems and disturbances. The unit will also cover specific issues related to counselling individuals presenting with problems pertaining to sexuality, sexual functioning and/or sexual health issues. Topics will include the role of intimacy and communication in sexual relations, female-specific and male-specific sexual problems and dysfunctions, sexuality and sexual functioning in abuse and trauma survivors, sexuality and health issues in chronic illness and disability, sexual health behaviours and practices, sexuality and eating disorders, and gay and lesbian sexuality issues.
