ABEC121: Young Children and the Arts in ATSI Contexts
This unit provides an overview of the arts (children's literature, drama, movement, music and the visual arts) and explores their roles in the lives of young children. Each art form is investigated separately with particular emphasis on the visual arts and drama. The integration of art forms in early childhood will be explored. Particular examples of ATSI children's art (both urban and rural) will be used for illustration of unit content and tutorial discussion. The significance of the environment and adult facilitation for the arts will be explored in the context of ATSI cultures. A visit to the Yiribana gallery (AGNSW) will highlight ways in which ATSI art can be used as a teaching resource with young children.
