ABST300: Pathways for Indigenous Studies
Students attempting this unit should have a good grasp of the concepts of modernity, postmodernity, colonialism, postcolonialism, liberalism and neoliberalism.
After reviewing the broad historical, political and legal discourses that have shaped relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, in some specific postcolonial and post postcolonial contexts, such as the independent Pacific, we investigate what may constitute Indigenous studies. In doing this we not only take account of the impact of the colonial encounter in shaping Indigenous identities, but consider the ways in which Indigenous peoples make themselves within their own communities.
Although ABST100 and ABST200 are not pre-requisites for this unit it is highly recommended that students are familiar with the concepts raised in those units.
