CBMS332: Protein Discovery and Analysis
This unit concerns chemical principles underlying developments taking place in protein science, including the disciplines of proteomics, structural biology and bioinformatics. The unit covers methods used today in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries to isolate and purify proteins, including engineered recombinant forms. Recent developments in techniques of mass spectrometry and electrophoresis are discussed in relation to proteomics analysis. Relevant biomolecular analysis methods (amino acid, carbohydrate) are presented. Molecular properties leading to the tertiary structure of proteins are discussed, and structure determination methods outlined. Practical aspects of the unit involve hands-on chromatography purification, 2-Dgels mass spectrometry, molecular graphics and use of protein web-based resources.
