CUL101: Seeing Culture: Vision, Visuality and The Senses

Visual culture brings together a range of theories, practices and texts that explore the relationship between vision, visuality and the way people experience the world around them. This unit introduces students to a variety of critical concepts which can be used in the analysis of visual imagery and media, including film, television, photography and Information Technology -- an increasingly important skill in an age characterised by the 'tendency to picture or visualise existence' (Mirzoeff, 1998: 6). The unit examines the ways visual culture shapes (and is shaped by) our social worlds, our bodies and identities, focussing on the visual with respect to normalising practices, contemporary global politics and changing technologies. Finally, the visual is placed within the context of cultural analyses dealing with 'the senses', or what is now known as sensory cultural studies.
