2009 Course Handbook

CUL203: Performance Studies I

The main theme for performance exploration in this course is the cultural practice of everyday 'acting/performing' with a view toward a broader spectrum of performance. This unit examines the practices of contemporary performance work, identifying social and cultural issues (relating to gender, femininity, masculinity, and ethnicity) and artists' strategies. The time spent in class will consist of approximately 50 percent production exercise, 20 percent production analysis, and 30 percent theoretical study. Students are expected to work in groups for the production exercise. The works produced by students are regarded as working models or prototypes for analysis and theoretical discussion.
