2009 Course Handbook
CUL205: Drama, Screen, Society
What is 'good' film acting? And what is behind such value judgements? This unit investigates a range of theories and practices concerning acting for the screen. As students learn about some of the training associated with 20th-century screen acting, they study films and explore how screen performances embody implicit ideas about acting and, simultaneously, ideas about the human subject. During the unit, students meet a professional film actor and director, thereby learning about the relationship between the pragmatics of day-to-day screen-acting practice and more formal acting knowledge. In taking the unit, students are not required to perform, however some tutorials will be workshop-based.
