CUL307: Multimedia: The Poetics of New Media

This unit explores the different modes of meaning-making used in the production of multimedia texts, such as words, images, sound, movement, touch. We look at these different elements aesthetically, textually, philosophically, socially for how they come together to make a text and the kinds of meanings the subsequent text makes available to users. The unit will focus particularly on web sites, though other forms of multimedia will be discussed.

This unit is not about the technical practice of multimedia or web site design, but is an exploration of how those forms of communication operate in today's world -- the kinds of meanings they convey to users and how we as creators of texts (and meanings) communicate ourselves and our values to those users.
