2009 Course Handbook

DANC300: Screen, Media and Dance

Movement meets technology in a unit which offers a multi-faceted approach to dance on the screen. Students will make a short dance film in a workshop designed to create vision from both sides of the camera. Dancing for two dimensions will be investigated. We will investigate the exploding field of digitised and virtual dance and the technological mapping of moving bodies that creates new art forms and resilient documentation. Dance will be investigated as mediated performance: does the camera create the dance? Do bodies fashion technology? Dance films will be investigated, framed by both film studies and performance studies. Australian art films will be analysed with guest lectures from the film-makers.
