GEOS382: Environmental Analysis Using GIS

GIS provide tools to describe and analyse phenomena and processes in the natural environment, and to model impacts from anthropogenic processes. This course provides theoretical GIS knowledge and practical GIS techniques for graduates in environmental fields. Course topics include: modelling landforms and land cover in GIS, use of remotely sensed data to derive spatial information on land cover, an introduction to geostatistics, and a range of case studies from areas including catchment hydrology, climate variables, pollutant distributions, natural hazards including bushfire, and vegetation mapping. Practical sessions cover techniques for data collection and preparation, spatial analysis and map creation and culminate in an individual project in an area nominated by the student.
