2009 Course Handbook

HRM217: Human Resource Planning and Performance Management

This unit examines the individual's career from two perspectives. Firstly, it examines career management issues such as changing workplace and consequential changes in careers. Secondly, it takes the perspective of the organisation and examines the literature on competencies and planning approaches such as 'work force planning'. The unit contains a strong focus on the attainment of relevant generic skills. The role of managers in planning individual careers is also analysed and various methods and techniques for career management are outlined. Performance management techniques are analysed in detail including the need to link business goals and outcomes to performance criteria. While providing a theoretical background, the subject has a strong practical focus.
