INFO310: Technical Project
The objective of this unit of study is to impart to students a concept of the 'project process' and the activities that must come together in an industrial project. Students form project teams that work closely with an industrial partner and an academic supervisor throughout the year on a project specified by the partner. For example, the team may take existing hardware produced by a company and a requirement that the hardware should be expanded to include other features. Different members of the team could then take on the job of designing the hardware, modifying software, producing a marketing plan and a sales plan, becoming involved in the production engineering and quality control of the new product, preparing documentation, organising the distribution and so on. All of these activities can be tightly coupled with regular team reviews and presentations so that all students obtain some knowledge of each of the areas while specialising individually in one or a few aspects.
Students must contribute to the preparation of a combined team project report summarising the overall project, and additionally must prepare a detailed report on their individual contribution to the effort.
