JPN123: Japan's Contemporary Culture through Manga

It is widely acknowledged that manga holds a significant place in contemporary Japanese culture. This unit provides a unique insight into Japanese society through the study of manga and anime from various perspectives. Manga and anime history, themes, genres, stylistic and narrative conventions, and characterisation are examined, along with related issues such as gender, sexuality, cuteness, individuals and society, as well as the social role and influence of manga and anime. Original Japanese manga and anime will be used in class, with English translations, whilst all lectures will be conducted in English. No prior knowledge of Japanese language is required.
