JPN223: Manga and Representation of Identity
Manga and anime texts combine visual art forms with strong narrative-driven structures that portray a diverse range of social phenomena, but a large number of works feature a particular focus on issues of individual identity. Following JPN123, this unit provides a close examination of the rich and profound representations of social issues relating to identity in manga and anime, paying particular attention to the fashioning of self and the individual's quest for and negotiation of subjective forms of agency. No prior knowledge of Japanese language required.
