JPN323: Manga: Global Imagery
The recent extraordinary growth in the international reception and consumption of manga and anime indicates that these media have spread from their local source and now constitute diverse forms of multi-modal imagery with global reach and appeal. This unit examines what we are sharing, who is sharing it (through analysis of markets such as Asia, the US and Europe) and how manga and anime are morphed in the cross-cultural communication process. This unit will also provide an understanding of interdisciplinary analysis in the manga and anime field, in areas such as education, translation (fansubs/scanlations) and art. This unit is conducted in English, and no prior knowledge of Japanese language is required.
