JPN330: Reading in Japanese Literature
This general education unit will aim at encouraging students to develop an insight into Japanese literature and its significance and lengthy history within a global context, through the examination of major works from various genres and periods of Japanese literature. In particular, scholarly focus will be placed on the classical Japanese masterpiece The Tale of Genji and the intertexuality of the novel in various fields of art from later periods, such as poems, novels, manga/anime, stage plays and other (audio) visual media. To enhance the literary analysis, attention will also be directed at the socio-cultural aspects of each period.
