LAW115: Foundations of Law

This unit consolidates the introduction to legal theory and fundamental legal concepts in LAW 114. The unit provides a general introduction to legal systems in the western and non western traditions. It includes a brief introduction to International Law. It goes on to analyse in detail the legal institutions in the Australian legal system. It covers topics including: the concept of the state, the principles underpinning representative government in Australia, the. sources of law in Australia, the place of Aboriginal peoples in the Australian legal system, the role of the core institutions of government in making, administering and interpreting the law. The unit introduces students to the core legal scholarship skills of legal research, reading cases and statutory interpretation.
