2009 Course Handbook
LAW416: European Law and Institutions
This unit introduces the European Union and the European Court of Human Rights. Special emphasis is given to human rights issues, as well as the consequences of European legal affairs for Australians. We also examine the concept of the nation and consider the extent to which we owe duties to our country, as well as the extent to which the nation state can and should be held externally accountable for the way it treats its citizens. The unit is essential for anyone hoping to work or study in Europe (including the UK), and is extremely useful for those thinking of careers in international relations, trade and human rights. Even if you do not aspire to those areas, the course will enrich your understanding of Australian law as you explore how issues familiar to you are handled by legal institutions very different from your own. You also get experience in advocacy through acting in a series of mock trials before the European Court of Human Rights and the European Court of Justice.
