2009 Course Handbook

LAW434: Media Law

This unit takes an international and comparative perspective on key issues relating to the media, including cinema, television and the internet. How do different countries regulate aspects of the media such as political coverage, privacy, violence, pornography, vilification and advertising? How do we hit the right balance between state media control and the right of individuals to free expression? Should Rupert Murdoch's right to free speech be understood as the same as yours and mine? And how do and should governments address the challenges inherent in the globalisation of media? We also look at the day-to-day legal restrictions on what citizens in different countries see and hear in their media. Finally, you get an opportunity to experience at first hand what it is like to advise on what appears on television.
